Hi AMFisHers! Spring is pretty much here and the pike will be roaming the shallows soon enough, which makes for some great fun catching this top of the food chain fish species predator.
Thought I would share some tips on how to catch some spring pike, with one key thing being make sure to keep your baits relatively small and lean looking, because baitfish are at their smallest this time of year so a 2″ to 3″ length in a leaner body style is a good choice.
Rapala, Bomber, Strike King and many other brands have various baits in this size and typically crankbaits in natural colours can be extremely productive this time of year. Even going to a mid size Mepps spinner or Blue Fox spinner will do the trick, silvers and gold’s are good colours pics for these baits.
Pike tend to seek the warmer water in the spring months in search of feed and the warm sun after that long winter under the ice, this is where you will want to fish. You can also works your baits a little quicker as well, spring means everything ins scurrying about and fish will be a little more aggressive when it comes to feeding, faster moving bait does not give the fish much time to see what they are about to attack, they usually go in for the kill and hook themselves.
I recommend fishing the shallows of all the shorelines that have access to a little deeper water as well, pike will also need an escape route should trouble arise. If you still to using natural patterns like, perch, silver, gold, yellow, orange you may just find yourself tugging back on that fishing rod time and time again!
Thank you for your time and I hope you found some of these details in the fishing post helpful….tight lines this spring!
