Hi AMFisHers! This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog is about using heavily salted baits:
Salted baits can catch you a lot of fish as do all scented baits, whether they are natural scents, live prey technology blood trail scents and pheromones, BUT understanding how they each make a bait look when you present them to the fish is a very key thing.
Did you know that heavily salted baits sink? They are so dense in the water that these salted baits sink and further more do not look as you think they might when you are using them. Let’s take a salted worm for example, that you Texas rigged, it will not sit straight up off the bottom as you might have thought, all that salt will weigh the worm down significantly so it may be more flat off the bottom and only be moving with the current.
There is no issue here if this is how you want the bait to look, as it does work at times, BUT if you are thinking the bait is standing up off the bottom and it’s not you could be costing yourself some good catches that day.
If the vertical look is what you are after then consider using a regular scented bait, slightly salted bait or add some fishing scent to a non scented worm, as these options will allow your worm to sit upright off the bottom which is the look you wanted.
Once you understand how important it is to know how a bait actually sits when you are using it, you will be able to apply this to all fishing situations, resulting in more fish being caught.
Salt and heavily scented baits are very dense, so they will in many cases hang downwards and not move around as freely as a non scented or salted bait. Let me use a drop shot rig as another example, if you have a minnow style soft plastic on this rig that is heavily salted it may hang downward making the look of the bait off, so by using a non salted soft plastic minnow bait with a little fishing scent will make the bait sit more horizontal giving it a more realistic and natural appearance.
I recommend trying a few baits in a glass of water at home so you can see the differences, weighing them as well will give you a better idea of how heavy some soft plastic baits actually are.
