This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – how much power is needed when setting the hook?

Happy Friday AMFisHers!  This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog is about how much power is actually needed to set the hook on a fish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZtkrRy3zG9I

Over the years I have read many fishing magazines and watched many fishing shows, always crossed my mind as to why the fisherman were wrenching back on the rods so hard, after all it is just a fish we are setting the hook into.

Fished an amateur tournament a few years back with a pro and he tells me if I feel a fish to se the hook as hard as I can to the point that it was ok if I broke the rod.

Scratched my head over this which is why I decided shoot a video on this topic, you will clearly see what happens when you set the hook with lots of power, very clear as to what the end result could be.

Do we need to set the hook at times, obviously yes BUT do you need to use every ounce of power you have absolutely not.  There are times where fish will strike so well that they are hooked perfectly, a small short quick pull on the rod will secure that fish for you.  There are other times where fish hit lightly and yes here is where you need a little more power on the hook set but the key word here is little.

In the case of bigger fish like a musky who has a very hard structured mouth or a smallmouth who has a hard roof of the mouth to crush crayfish, you will need a stronger hook set to get through that tough mouth, but remember a massive power hook set may actually lose you more fish in the long run.

Hope you found this video helpful, be mindful of how you set the hook and you may just see yourself landing more fish!
