Hi AMFisHers! This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog(Learn more here: http://www.amfish.ca) is about increasing the size of your baits as the season progresses:
In the very early months bait fish and forage are at their smallest and grow steadily throughout the season. Schools of fish will follow bait fish so they are close enough to feed on them and it makes sense that as the bait fish grow your bait should as well.
Example if there are perch in the waters your fish that start out at one inch in length in the early months, then grow to two inches, from there to three inches and so on, you will want to match the current size as best you can and this means matching to the length and width of the bait fish.
As you can see in this picture below these longer thinner style baits range in size, with different lengths and widths of each bait. Thin in the early months in a good choice for a bait.
By doing this you increase your odds of catching better quality fish, as you are not throwing a bait that fits the size of schooling bait fish. This does not by any means mean that you can’t catch fish on smaller or larger bait in the earlier season, because you can as fish will always tell you what size bait they want, BUT what this does allow you to do is always use a similar size bait at that specific time that fish are seeing regularly, this is where your odds increase.
In this image below you will see broader thicker body baits that range in different sizes, all good choices for later season when bait fish and forage are their largest size.
We need to remember that fish stay close to schools of bait and are used to seeing what they feed on 24/7. By studying the size of bait fish and forage in the lakes on every outing, you can take this small yet valuable steps to catching bigger better quality fish!
