Hi AMFisHers! This weeks AMFisH(LEARN more here: http://www.amfish.ca) fishing vlog is about the differences between round bill and square bill crankbaits.
Crankbaits are a great versatile bait for covering a lot of water quickly and do produce fish under various conditions. Now if you use crankbaits you will also know there are millions to choose from, with so many different colour patterns, shapes, sizes, noisy non noisy, you name it the fishing industry has made it.
When I refer to the bill of a crankbait I am talking about the clear plastic lip just below the o-ring on the front of the bait. This is the diving lip also called the bill of the crankbait and it as well comes in various sizes, widths and shapes for different uses. A very short lip is designed that way so the bait only dives a few feet below the surface, where a very long lip lets say 3 inches in length is designed to make that bait dive down to 20ft or more.
The focus of this vlog is to help you understand the difference between the most common shapes, the round and square bill. Round bills or diving lips as many of us know them as do give a bait a very steady action/wobble when being retrieved. A square bill however will give a bait a much more erratic swimming action which is much more pronounced, as it will be a slightly wider wobble from the back half of the bait.

Square bill baits were actually designed with a square bill not just for the different action but more for the ability of being able to bounce the bait off of structure. A round bill does not do so well around structure as it will hang up relatively easily, BUT a square bill bait will actually deflect off of stumps, sunken branches, boulders, smaller rocks, dock post and even the tips of weeds. By having a bait that can touch structure and not get hung up, it allows you to make contact with various types of structure to create more of those reaction trigger strikes from fish. Example picture a large bass at the front post of a dock seeing a round bill crankbait swim right by, if that fish is not into eating or striking for whatever reason it might just continue sitting there not caring much for the bait. Now picture that same bass by that front dock post, having a square bill crankbait swim right by it the same way BUT it lightly taps the post and bounces away from it, now the chance of that bass striking has gone WAY UP because the bait triggered the attack mode from the bass.

This is where understanding more about the different bill/diving lip shapes can give you a clearer understanding of how to correctly use that bait. As I mentioned above crankbaits are a very versatile bait when you are looking to match forage like natural bait fish that fish feed on, BUT it is very important to understand the application of the crankbait and shape of the bill/diving lip can be mean more that just diving depth.
